Programs Awarding a Master's Degree

Preface

This Roster was prepared by the American College of Respiratory Therapy Education (ACRTE) to assist students in selecting a respiratory therapy graduate program. The roster also serves as a communication tool for existing and developing graduate respiratory therapy programs. The reader is encouraged to visit program web sites and to contact each program directly for more information. New or existing programs not included on the roster should use the "Contact Us" page to request a listing.

Master's Degree with a

Respiratory Therapy/Respiratory Care Major

There are three types of master’s degree programs which offer a major in respiratory therapy/respiratory care:
1) Direct-Entry into respiratory care professional practice master’s
degree program,

2) Post-professional master’s degree program for registered respiratory
therapists (RRTs) in education, research, management and/or advanced clinical specialty practice and

3) Advanced practice respiratory therapists (APRT) graduate degree program that prepare students to serve as a physician extender in both pulmonary medicine and critical care.
Direct-entry professional practice master’s degree programs are designed for students with a baccalaureate degree in a field other than respiratory care who have no prior competence in respiratory therapy/respiratory care. One aim of such programs is to prepare graduates to sit for the registry exams offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). In addition to preparing students to become RRTs, such programs often include course work in the areas of management and supervision, education, research and/or advanced specialty practice. The direct-entry master’s degree in respiratory care/respiratory therapy require completion of the academic prerequisites to become a registry eligible respiratory therapist.
Post professional master’s degree programs are designed to provide (RRTs) who possess a baccalaureate degree with leadership, management, research, and/or advanced specialty practice skills. Typically, this type of master’s program requires
that entering students hold the RRT credential and have completed an undergraduate degree program in respiratory care.
